Authors Avinash Ghalke & Nikhil Mahajan [selected for IEEE Bombay Section Contest] The advent of optical computing has transformed our notions of the speed and efficiency with which information can be processed and stored. The implications of this rapidly expanding branch of applied optics are far-reaching and impinge on many areas of computing, artificial intelligence, machine vision and neural networks. The present day computer devices and memory storage have reached a limit. Optics hopes to provide a likely solution. This paper throws light on how optics can give a new look to computer architectures. Devices for interfacing between optics and electronics (SLMs) have been discussed. Also general information and classification for these SLMs is provided. The importance of Associative Memory in Cache and Virtual Memory (VM) has been explained and its compatibility with optics has been put forth. The unique advantages of optics discussed here, over conventional electronics suggests that optics is becoming increasingly important in computers.
