Abstract:

As more and more people become "wired", an increasing number of people need to understand the basics of security in a networked world. This paper comprehensively explains all the concepts of Network Security, risks and how to deal with them. Networking, the types of networks and models, along with the TCP/IP protocol are discussed. It gives details regarding Risk management, network threats, firewalls, and more special-purpose secure networking devices.

INTRODUCTION

Connecting your private, internal network to an outside, untrusted network can be both a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that the exchange of computerized information (the lifeblood of modern commerce) is greatly facilitated. A curse in that you may be exposing your valuable network resources and the reputation of your organization to the whims of Internet hackers or industrial spies. The Internet, like any other society, is plagued with the kind of people who enjoy the electronic equivalent of writing on other people's walls with spraypaint, tearing their mailboxes off, or just sitting in the street blowing their car horns. Some people try to get real work done over the Internet, and others have sensitive or proprietary data they must protect. To minimize the risk while maximizing the benefit requires that an organization develop a comprehensive Network Security Plan. This should include user security awareness training, qualified network security system administrators, and a network architecture that promotes structured security and the use of appropriate network security components.
